Kongnamul is a side dish made from soy bean sprouts.  It is usually prepared to be spicy, but some prefer it more mild.  Kongnamul is a traditional and very popular side dish among Koreans.


  • Soy bean sprouts - 1 1/2 pounds
  • Green onions - 3
  • Garlic - 1 clove
  • Sesame seeds
  • Olive oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Red pepper - optional

Step 1

Rinse the soy bean sprouts thoroughly.  Put all of the soy bean sprouts, 3 cups of water, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a pot and cook on medium-high heat for about 10 minutes.

Step 2

While the soy bean sprouts are cooking, chop the green onions and the garlic.

Step 3

Flip the soy bean sprouts over and cook for 1 more minute.

Step 4

Drain the soy bean sprouts and put them in a bowl.  Add green onions, garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons sesame oil, 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, a dash of pepper, and 1 tablespoon red pepper.  Mix well.

Serve and enjoy!
